What Is Robots.txt?

Robots.txt

It is great when search engines frequently visit your site and index your content but often there are cases when indexing parts of your online content is not what you want. For instance, if you have two versions of a page (one for viewing in the browser and one for printing), you'd rather have the printing version excluded from crawling, otherwise you risk being imposed a duplicate content penalty. Also, if you happen to have sensitive data on your site that you do not want the world to see, you will also prefer that search engines do not index these pages (although in this case the only sure way for not indexing sensitive data is to keep it offline on a separate machine). Additionally, if you want to save some bandwidth by excluding images, stylesheets and javascript from indexing, you also need a way to tell spiders to keep away from these items.

One way to tell search engines which files and folders on your Web site to avoid is with the use of the Robots metatag. But since not all search engines read metatags, the Robots matatag can simply go unnoticed. A better way to inform search engines about your will is to use a robots.txt file.

What Is Robots.txt?

Robots.txt is a text (not html) file you put on your site to tell search robots which pages you would like them not to visit. Robots.txt is by no means mandatory for search engines but generally search engines obey what they are asked not to do. It is important to clarify that robots.txt is not a way from preventing search engines from crawling your site (i.e. it is not a firewall, or a kind of password protection) and the fact that you put a robots.txt file is something like putting a note “Please, do not enter” on an unlocked door – e.g. you cannot prevent thieves from coming in but the good guys will not open to door and enter. That is why we say that if you have really sen sitive data, it is too naïve to rely on robots.txt to protect it from being indexed and displayed in search results.

The location of robots.txt is very important. It must be in the main directory because otherwise user agents (search engines) will not be able to find it – they do not search the whole site for a file named robots.txt. Instead, they look first in the main directory and if they don't find it there, they simply assume that this site does not have a robots.txt file and therefore they index everything they find along the way. So, if you don't put robots.txt in the right place, do not be surprised that search engines index your whole site.

Structure of a Robots.txt File

The structure of a robots.txt is pretty simple (and barely flexible) – it is an endless list of user agents and disallowed files and directories. Basically, the syntax is as follows:

User-agent:

Disallow:

“User-agent” are search engines' crawlers and disallow: lists the files and directories to be excluded from indexing. In addition to “user-agent:” and “disallow:” entries, you can include comment lines – just put the # sign at the beginning of the line:

# All user agents are disallowed to see the /temp directory.

User-agent: *

Disallow: /temp/

The Traps of a Robots.txt File

When you start making complicated files – i.e. you decide to allow different user agents access to different directories – problems can start, if you do not pay special attention to the traps of a robots.txt file. Common mistakes include typos and contradicting directives. Typos are misspelled user-agents, directories, missing colons after User-agent and Disallow, etc. Typos can be tricky to find but in some cases validation tools help.

The more serious problem is with logical errors. For instance:

User-agent: *

Disallow: /temp/

User-agent: Googlebot

Disallow: /images/

Disallow: /temp/

Disallow: /cgi-bin/

The above example is from a robots.txt that allows all agents to access everything on the site except the /temp directory. Up to here it is fine but later on there is another record that specifies more restrictive terms for Googlebot. When Googlebot starts reading robots.txt, it will see that all user agents (including Googlebot itself) are allowed to all folders except /temp/. This is enough for Googlebot to know, so it will not read the file to the end and will index everything except /temp/ - including /images/ and /cgi-bin/, which you think you have told it not to touch. You see, the structure of a robots.txt file is simple but still serious mistakes can be made easily.

Tools to Generate and Validate a Robots.txt File

Having in mind the simple syntax of a robots.txt file, you can always read it to see if everything is OK but it is much easier to use a validator.

User agent: *

Disallow: /temp/

this is wrong because there is no slash between “user” and “agent” and the syntax is incorrect.

In those cases, when you have a complex robots.txt file – i.e. you give different instructions to different user agents or you have a long list of directories and subdirectories to exclude, writing the file manually can be a real pain. But do not worry – there are tools that will generate the file for you. What is more, there are visual tools that allow to point and select which files and folders are to be excluded. But even if you do not feel like buying a graphical tool for robots.txt generation, there are online tools to assist you. For instance, the Server-Side Robots Generator offers a dropdown list of user agents and a text box for you to list the files you don't want indexed. Honestly, it is not much of a help, unless you want to set specific rules for different search engines because in any case it is up to you to type the list of directories but is more than nothing.

What On Earth Is An Algorithm

What On Earth Is An Algorithm

Each Search engine has something called an algorithm which is the formula that each search engine uses to evaluate webpages and determine their relevance and value when crawling them for possible inclusion in their search engine.A crawler is the robot that browses all of these pages for the search engine.

GOOGLE Algorithm Is Key

Google has a comprehensive and highly developed technology, a straightforward interface and a wide-ranging array of search tools which enable the users to easily access a variety of information online.Google users can browse the web and find information in various languages, retrieve maps, stock quotes and read news, search for a long lost friend using the phonebook listings available on Google for all of US cities and basically surf the 3 billion odd web pages on the internet! Google boasts of having world’s largest archive of Usenet messages, dating all the way back to 1981. Google’s technology can be accessed from any conventional desktop PC as well as from various wireless platforms such as WAP and i-mode phones, handheld devices and other such Internet equipped gadgets.

Simple Methods for Link Building.

Linking is one with the most considerable elements used for escalating traffic to a web website. In order to get links to a web page, you will discover a few fundamental strategies that can be applied.

Prior to signing an agreement or a bond with a business, it really is vital to ensure that along using the agreement, there is an obligation mentioned, stating that, a link should be placed between the two sites. PRWeb enables businesses to create online visibility and exposure. PRWeb is accepted by virtually all corporations as they are reasonably priced, and also facilitates access to on the web news indexes too as established journal and magazine editors. Producing use of URL Wire is a different implies as a result of which the commencement of a site can be broadcast.

Yet one more way to build links is as a result of Blogs. This approach has been largely adapted by all in order to get extra links. Implementing RSS feeds if there is certainly a blog, or if an article is placed on the web page on a regular basis, aids group the blogs or the abstract of your articles. This in turn, helps in publicising the web site.

Selecting eminent directories and submitting the list on those directories, also improves broadcasting the company. It can be important to test for broken links i.e., links that don’t work any longer by making use of a dead link checker. It also looks for internet sites that fall under a specific category according for the owner’s needs. Every now and then a domain name that’s within the record, is often traced and redirected for the site.

A dead link checker also aids to uncover domain names and websites of previously competitive websites. It isn’t suggestible to opt or register for domain names which have brand names. A domain name is accessible when it becomes pending as Google removes it from the Google listings. Hence, this may possibly be an alternative after a directory listing as opposed to to wait or pay a fee for the list.

Keeping track of other web-sites that possibly may possibly consist of links which are relevant towards the organization, might be beneficial as linking using the individual’s internet site would also be valuable to their guests.

Productive internet professionals brought in a range of various ways and indicates to purchase links. There are many internet websites obtainable which are exclusively dedicated to link building where a web page owner can give a price to place the link on other germane internet sites. But this is often seldom very expensive. The benefit this technique offers is that, it saves a good deal of time as the links are immediately readily available.

Having said that, with every single program or technique, there may be a disadvantage. In this case, Google particularly mentions that this kind of strategy is just not just and it will price a whole lot to an internet site if at all, it uncovers that the links were bought.

Finally, it is finest to keep away from spamming by placing a good deal of posts or commenting on blogs that consist of links towards the web page. Sooner or later, the search engines will identify this as spam along with the impact is going to be negative on ranking.

Top Ten Features of a Good Web Site

Top Ten Features of a Good Web Site

As a professional web design business, we have created and re-created many sites. The "great" ones have certain things in common. We thought we'd share those elements with you.

1. Easy to read. If background colors or images are used, the text on top of the background should be in a color that can easily be seen. Use a color scheme that complements and is pleasing to the eye. White space between images and sections of text make a page easier to view.

2. Easy to navigate. A visitor should be able to find the information they are looking for without hassle and frustration. The site's navigation buttons should be grouped together. If image links are used, text links should also be provided for those people who have images turned off on their browser or are using an older browser that doesn't support images.

3. Comfortably viewed. A Web site should be easily viewable in all screen sizes without a visitor having to scroll horizontally (left to right).

4. Quick to download. Graphics and sounds add download time to a Web page. Use them sparingly. Don't make your visitors wait too long for your site to download or they will click away and probably won't return. It is a good idea to find out what the approximate download times are for people who are using 28K and 56K telephone modems. Not everyone has DSL or cable Internet.

5. Avoid dead links. Make sure that links on all your pages are working, whether they are internal links to pages within your site, or links to external Web sites.

6. Keep the content fresh. People are more apt to return to your Web site if they find new and interesting material. Post articles on your site, offer a newly updated "Internet Special" or provide fresh, helpful links. All these things cause visitors to bookmark your site as a reference tool.

7. Clear and to the point. Visitors should have a clear understanding of what your Web site is about when they visit. Studies have shown that people do not like to read computer screens, so keep your Web site copy interesting to read and to the point.

8. Keep your target audience in mind. Think about the people who would be interested in visiting your Web site. If you are designing a web site about razor blades and shaving cream for men, the site should have a masculine feel to it. Decorating the page with pink hearts and roses would not be a good idea!

9. Provide a form for visitors to contact you. Visitors are more likely to fill out a form to contact you than clicking on an e-mail link. Always make things easy for your visitors… especially contacting you.

10. Browser compatible. Check your Web site in the most popular browsers to make sure everything is displayed properly. The top two browsers used are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, but there are others such as the AOL browser, Mosaic, Opera and Web TV to name a few. Various versions of the same browser also display differently. It is a good idea to have a program on your computer that checks browser and version compatibility.

As you may have noticed from the above list, a great Web site isn't about fancy graphics, java scripts and animations. It is about creating a pleasurable, useful experience for your visitors… one they will want to repeat over and over again!

A Good Web Site Essentials

A Good Web Site Essentials

Anyone can make a website. Basic HTML will do. But let us all admit, some website really sucks. Some are poor in designs and layout, some are crappy in content and the list goes on. These details are commonly the pitfalls of a web site. Here are some basic fundamentals on creating a good website.

Title It's your website so it's your call on whatever title you want for it. But do remember that you are not the only one browsing or visiting your site. Keep in mind that in this case, you should consider the viability of your website so always think for the benefit of your visitors or at least think from their perspective. Your page title should be short but descriptive for two reasons. One is that it is the same phrase that will appear on the top of your page which will remind your guest what site they are browsing. Second is that once your guest bookmarks your website then it will be more convenient  for them not to edit it anymore since it is already descriptive enough.

Content Most visitors visit a site for information that is why the content of your page should be beneficial and interesting enough for your guests to come back. Beautiful graphics can be seen in a blink of an eye so if your content is inadequate then chances are your visitor will leave your website and never come back again.

Grammar and Spelling Never forget to proof read because it could ruin the web site's credibility. Check for grammar errors and spelling.

Images and Fonts Here, the layout comes in a little. Bear in mind that each visitor have  different browsers. And layouts  comes out differently from each and every browser. But of course it depends if it was tested and programmed well to attain the layout goal. Also, not all fonts are available on all computers. So i suggest a commonly-used font. Don't be overwhelmed in putting all the images in your resources. Keep it simple. Anyway, it will add up to you page load time especially if the image file is too large. Keep it pleasant to the eyes.

Page Length Articles are different from web content. You can write a very long article but writing for a web content is completely different. A web content should be short and brief. Usually, if the content of a page, especially if its the index page, is long enough that the visitor will have to scroll down to read it then it will definitely bore them and wouldn't even bother to read all of that.

Links  Links should be more than "click here" This is your chance to use your keywords for a better ranking in search engines.  The tool tip should also describe where the link is going to. Most importantly, the link should be relevant to your site to avoid being a link farm. Choose a quality link.

Contact us form This is very helpful because you will never know if a visitor is encountering problems with your site. This way, not only you can get feed backs from your guests, but also you can correct the problem fast. In doing a website remember  that you are trying to please your target market and not just yourself. Step into their shoes and see if your website will catch the interest of your market.

About SEO ?

"Search Engine Optimization "

Why do I need search engines optimization?

Most companies have a website of some kind, but only about 5% know of or use SearchEngine Optimization (SEO). If they do, they have usually learned about it because they spent thousands of dollars on a top-of-the-line website that no one came to visit. When they realized a nice website wasn't enough, they probably Googled "promoting my website" or "how to market my website.

"Why are some businesses more successful with their website than others? Is there a secret? SEO is now a requirement for any sized business to advertise with a website and be successful it! Especially now that every other previously effective marketing tool has become ineffective or out of reach. In the days before Internet there were a number of ways to successfully advertise. Now, however:

*Code Enforcement is cracking down on signs.

*Radio and TV advertising is getting too expensive and becoming less effective because of the number of stations.

*Newspapers are virtually useless as people turn to the web.

*Trade shows are few in number and most are no longer well-marketed.

*Almost no one uses a telephone book anymore because of the web.

*Bus benches and billboards cost a huge monthly fee and again, how many people look at them now a days?

The Internet is now the telephone book . So as a business you have to adapt and not only adapt well, but do one better than your competitors so your name comes up at the top of the list in any keyword search. No longer can you just buy a full page ad in a telephone book to stand out. You have to do the equivalent on the Internet. Your website has to stand out in the center of 2 billion other sites and out shine all the others in your industry to be successful.

I have a great looking website–isn't that enough?

Looks are one thing, but what's behind the looks is actually more important than what your visitors see when it comes to marketing your website to the search engines. It is so technically complex on how to get your website in the best standings and ranked at the top for the search terms(key words) you want people to find you with, that it is now an exact science which changes from year to year.

The novice should not even attempt it. The old easy methods for marketing your website do not work and can and will get your website domain name banned from many of the major search engines. Getting back in the search engines good graces after being banned is tough and sometimes near impossible.
